Localized Cryotherapy

SPORTS, INJURY & POST-SURGERY RECOVERY
We have the science that works.

The word is out. Bay area physicians, surgeons, and chiropractors are referring their patients to Arctic Restore as part of a rehabilitation program.

A Localized or Targeted Cryotherapy session is used to reduce pain, inflammation, and swelling in targeted areas. Unlike Whole Body Cryotherapy (WBC), which stimulates cold receptors all over the body in order to trigger an internal systemic anti-inflammatory response, local cryotherapy is comparable to “icing”, although much more powerful and efficient based on our clients’ experience. Localized Cryotherapy is becoming well documented as being used for the management of pain, inflammation in targeted areas, and offers a multitude of health benefits including:

  • Reduces swelling, inflammation and muscle tension
  • Increases blood flow to the area
  • Increases joint mobility and muscle strength
  • Shortens injury or post-op recovery times
  • Heals without infection or scars

The following conditions are contraindications to whole body cryotherapy: Pregnancy, severe Hypertension (BP> 180/100), acute or recent myocardial infarction, unstable angina pectoris, arrhythmia, symptomatic cardiovascular disease, cardiac pacemaker, peripheral arterial occlusive disease, venous thrombosis, acute or recent cerebrovascular accident, uncontrolled seizures, Raynaud’s Syndrome, fever, active cancer or tumor disease, symptomatic lung disorders, bleeding disorders, severe anemia, infection, claustrophobia, cold allergy, age less than 18 years (parental consent to treatment needed), acute kidney and urinary tract diseases.

Whole body cryohtherapy is very well tolerated and has minimal risks: Fluctuations in blood pressure during the procedure by up to 10 points systolically (this effect reverses after the end of the procedure, as peripheral circulation returns to normal), allergic reaction to extreme cold (rare), claustrophobia, anxiety, activation of some viral conditions (cold sores) etc. due to stimulation of the immune system.

Cryotherapy is not a medical procedure. We recommend that clients consult with a medical professional prior to using our services to confirm whether cryotherapy is appropriate for their health.
