26 Jul Wellness Tip – The Fukutsudzi Method
Why Are the Big Toes and Pinkies Positioned This Way?
At first glance, the Fukutsudzi Method can seem like an unusual position. Why do the big toes touch, the heels stay apart, and the pinkies meet overhead?
These positions work together with the rolled towel to create a gentle, full-body stretch that influences muscle tension, posture, and body awareness. The method is better understood through biomechanics than as a way of permanently “repositioning” bones.
Pinkies Together
With the arms overhead, palms down, and pinkies touching, the shoulders rotate outward and the front of the upper body lengthens.
This may:
✓ Open the chest
✓ Lengthen the latissimus dorsi
✓ Encourage shoulder-blade stability
✓ Promote gentle extension through the upper back
Towel at the Navel
The towel creates a gentle extension point beneath the lower back near the thoracolumbar junction.
This may:
✓ Counter prolonged sitting and flexion
✓ Gently stretch the abdominal wall
✓ Encourage rib-cage expansion
✓ Make diaphragmatic breathing feel easier
Big Toes Together
With the heels apart and the big toes touching, the hips settle into slight internal rotation.
This may:
✓ Encourage more symmetrical leg positioning
✓ Lightly engage the inner thighs
✓ Reduce one leg falling farther outward than the other
✓ Help the pelvis rest in a more centered position
Why Many People Feel Taller Afterwards
The effect is usually temporary and may reflect:
- Less rounding through the upper back
- More relaxed hip flexors
- Improved rib-cage expansion
- Reduced muscle guarding
- A more neutral standing posture
Can It Make the Waist Look Smaller?
The method does not reduce body fat or permanently change skeletal structure.
However, improved posture may temporarily make the waist appear more defined by changing the relationship between the rib cage, pelvis, abdominal wall, and breathing mechanics.
Start Gently
Begin with one to two minutes and gradually work toward five.
Stop if you experience pain, numbness, tingling, dizziness, or worsening symptoms. People with osteoporosis, recent spinal injuries, recent surgery, or significant back conditions should speak with a healthcare professional before trying the position.
To get up, roll onto your side first and then sit up slowly.
